Wyzenbeek vs Martindale: Which Abrasion Test Matters?
Wyzenbeek and Martindale measure the same thing (abrasion) by different methods. This comparison lays out when each test matters, the ACT thresholds, and how to translate between double-rubs and cycles without getting burned.
What each test actually does
Both tests measure how a fabric surface survives repeated abrasion. Both are accelerated simulations, not real-world predictions. Both give the specifier a common number for comparing fabrics.
Wyzenbeek (ASTM D4157) clamps a fabric specimen flat under tension. A cotton duck or wire mesh abradant moves back and forth across it in a linear motion. One back-and-forth cycle is one double-rub.
Martindale (ASTM D4966 in North America, BS EN ISO 12947 in Europe) mounts a specimen on a platform. An abradant of standard worsted wool or fabric moves across it in a Lissajous figure. One complete figure is one cycle.

ACT thresholds for both tests
ACT publishes contract minimums for both test methods. The thresholds distinguish general contract from heavy-duty.

Conversion rules of thumb
There is no exact mathematical conversion between the two tests. The abradant is different, the motion is different, and different fibers react differently.
A common industry rule of thumb: one Martindale cycle is roughly equivalent to one to two Wyzenbeek double-rubs for most upholstery constructions. This is a range, not a formula.
For contract work, specify to the test your standard requires. If your hospitality client requires 50,000 Wyzenbeek, do not substitute a fabric tested only to 50,000 Martindale and call it a match.
Which test to prioritize by application
- Hospitality (North America): Wyzenbeek primary. Most hotel standards (Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt) reference ASTM D4157.
- Hospitality (Europe, Asia): Martindale primary. ISO 12947 is the benchmark.
- Healthcare: Both are used; often Wyzenbeek in the US, with additional bleach cleanability.
- Corporate / office: Wyzenbeek in the US; both are requested on LEED and WELL projects.
- Residential: Either test is acceptable; client concerns are usually more about stain and cleanability.
- Transportation: Wyzenbeek with wire mesh abradant (Method 2) or Martindale at very high cycles.
Why high numbers are not always the full story
A fabric rated to 100,000 double-rubs will not necessarily last longer than one rated to 50,000. Real-world wear is driven by fiber choice, yarn twist, weave tightness, and the abrasive character of the garment or object riding on it.
A loose bouclé at 30,000 double-rubs may outlast a tight flat-weave at 50,000 if the end use involves pilling or yarn snag rather than pure abrasion.
For most residential and light contract, anything above the ACT contract threshold is sufficient. Chasing six-figure double-rub numbers matters only when the facility standard demands it.
How to read an abrasion spec on a fabric
A proper abrasion spec includes the test method, the abradant, and the number. For example: 50,000 double-rubs, ASTM D4157, cotton duck #10. Or: 40,000 cycles, ASTM D4966, worsted wool.
A spec that just says 50,000 double-rubs without a test method is incomplete. For a critical project, request the test report, not just the number.

Is Wyzenbeek more accurate than Martindale?
Neither is more accurate. They use different motion and different abradants. Wyzenbeek is dominant in North American spec work; Martindale is dominant in Europe. For a given project, use the test your client's standard requires.
What is a good abrasion rating for a residential sofa?
15,000 double-rubs Wyzenbeek or 20,000 cycles Martindale is typical for a residential sofa. Performance-rated fabrics often come in at 30,000 to 50,000, which is ample for daily family use.
Does Wyzenbeek test to failure?
The test runs until a defined endpoint, typically the first broken yarn or visible wear. Many fabrics are reported as having reached a stopping point (for example 100,000 double-rubs) without observable wear; they are not necessarily at failure.
Can I use a Martindale-tested fabric on a US contract project?
Yes, if the project's specifying party accepts Martindale data. Many architects and designers will, provided the fabric clears the equivalent ACT threshold. Confirm in writing before substitution.
How many double-rubs does a hospitality lobby need?
Most major hotel brand standards require 50,000 Wyzenbeek minimum for lobby and public-area seating, with 100,000 common for heavy-traffic chains. Ask the brand's FF&E specification for the project standard.
