Pet-Friendly Upholstery Fabric: What to Look For

Pets are hard on furniture. The right fabric resists claws, hides fur, and cleans up after accidents. Here is what to look for and what to avoid.

What makes a fabric pet-friendly

Three things matter most: how tightly the fabric is woven, whether it has a stain-resistant performance finish, and what its cleaning code allows. A tight weave gives claws less to catch. A performance finish helps spills and accidents release before they set. A water-based (W) or water-and-solvent (WS) cleaning code makes cleanup practical.

  • Tight, flat weaves and performance wovens resist claw snags.
  • Performance finishes release stains and odors more readily.
  • Faux leather and vinyl wipe clean, which suits homes with pets that shed or drool.
  • Mid-tone, textured, or heathered colors disguise fur and minor wear.

What to avoid

Loose loops, delicate bouclé, and open weaves give claws something to grab and pull. Untreated natural fibers absorb odors and stains. Very dark solids show fur, and very pale solids show everything else.

The materials that hold up

Performance wovens with a stain-resistant finish are the everyday choice for pet households. For homes with heavy shedding or the occasional accident, faux leather and vinyl are the easiest to keep clean. Whatever you choose, check the cleaning code so you know how to treat a spill before it sets.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best upholstery fabric for dogs and cats?

A tight performance weave with a stain-resistant finish is the best all-around choice. For heavy shedders or frequent accidents, faux leather and vinyl are easiest to wipe clean.

Is performance fabric scratch-proof?

No fabric is fully claw-proof, but tight performance wovens give claws far less to catch than loops or open weaves, and they clean up more easily.

How do I clean pet stains from upholstery?

Follow the cleaning code on the spec. Treat accidents promptly with the approved agent for that code (W, S, WS, or X). Performance finishes make this easier, but speed still matters.
